When Was Basketball Invented?

One of the most popular kinds of sports in the world was invented in December 1891,  in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA.

Dr. James Naismith, PE instructor from Canada, created a new activity keep students active during winter, when outdoor sports such as American football and football (soccer) were not available.

The simple idea was to create a game that could be played indoors with minimal injury risk.

First game of basketball was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets as goals. Naismith created 13 original rules of basketball. No dribbling was described, just passing.

How Basketball Spread Around the World

Basketball quickly became popular in colleges and schools across the USA. It first appeared in Olympic Games in 1936, Berlin Games. After that basketball gained popularity internationally, becoming a widely played sport.

From Humble Beginnings to the NBA

NBA was founded in 1946, turning basketball into a professional global sport. The real breakthrough was achieved by performance by Michael Jordan. Followed by Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.

Professional basketball leagues exist in every continent, except Antarctica. Women’s basketball, such as WNBA and European leagues, is also developing rapidly. The sport continues to evolve with faster-paced games, more games played each season, increasing audience, social media stars, and global tournaments.

From peach baskets with a soccer ball to billion-dollar arenas, it’s a sport anyone can play. Fun, dynamic, team-oriented, accessible and dramatic. The reason it still captures hearts worldwide.
