Last fall I made a video reviewing Salomon Active Skin 4 Trail Running Vest. I used it for a few more months after that and decided to add some thoughts here. Especially since the trail running summer season is at full swing. Here is my Salomon Active Skin 4 review for your attention 🙂
I used the vest on two continents. Both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. During three seasons except of the coldest one. Consequently I have have some feedback to share.
Here is my video review, by the way, it would be cool if you subscribed to my YouTube channel, we plan a lot of content coming in.
Anyway, the review will contain two major blocks: pros and cons.
Salomon Active Skin 4 Review: Pros
The vest performs great and does most of the things it is designed for. It is breathable, lightweight, fits perfectly and doesn’t wiggle when you run. It has plenty of compartments for your running essentials. Except of food and water I manage to have a bunch of tech equipment with me on the go, such as my phone, GoPro camera and sometimes a power bank and extra batteries for the camera.
l like the locking system of the vest, which makes it sit ideally. Each lacing point makes the elastic cord automatically adjust to your size.
Salomon Active Skin 4 Review: Cons
One of the negative things I have to say about this vest, and I mentioned it in the video, the water flasks that are included with the vest make the water smell and taste plastic. After a year of use it partly disappeared, but still present.
My second point is subjective and debatable. The back cushioning of the vest is minimal, so any hard objects you put at the back compartment will be pushing into your back while running. This downside is understandable though, the design is aimed to keep the vest lightweight and minimal, so some sacrifices cannot be avoided.
Third thing I would really enjoy some straps in front of the vest to attach equipment. Something similar to the straps on a tactical vest that you can attach equipment to, on the tactical vests it’s called MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) webbing. Not too many, too keep it lightweight, just 3-4 slots.
In my case I’d use it for the camera, but I’m sure others would find ways to use it, such as for a flashlight, protective gear, etc.
