Ring Of Fire
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
The bout between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury, scheduled for May 18th, is causing a stir in the world of boxing. Negotiations for the match were protracted, with Fury initially demanding a significantly larger purse than Usyk. Despite Usyk’s flexibility, Fury ultimately turned down the deal.
Gypsy King holding the WBC title and the Ukrainian possessing the WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring belts, the winner of this bout will emerge as the undisputed heavyweight champion.
In early November 2023, the parties concluded a groundbreaking agreement – Usyk and Fury finally agreed to the fight. Saudi authorities organised this event, ensuring financial compensation for the boxers and setting February 17th as the fight date.
Usyk vs Fury New Date
However, just 2.5 weeks before the anticipated bout, Fury suffered a setback. A blow above his right eye during training, reminiscent of an injury he sustained in a fight against Otto Wallin in 2019, forced Fury to withdraw from the match, disappointing fans worldwide.
Despite Fury’s withdrawal, the show must go on. Usyk’s team and the organisers remained determined to deliver an event. While journalists speculated about potential replacements for Fury, Riyadh decided to reschedule the entire event for May 18th.
The Ring of Fire is anticipated to generate substantial income from pay-per-view purchases, sponsorships, and attendance at live events. Fury plans to earn approximately 55 million, while Usyk aims for 27 million.
Preparation
In preparation for the rescheduled fight, both fighters committed to intense training regimes. For Usyk, this bout holds significant importance beyond financial gains. With previous victories over Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois, Usyk aims to solidify his status as one of the greatest boxers of his generation.
The stakes are undeniably high, with both Usyk and Fury eyeing victory. Initially seen as the underdog, Usyk’s odds have shifted, with analysts no longer viewing Fury as the clear favourite.
Usyk, Fury, What Do They Say?
Leading up to the fight, both Usyk and Fury have offered insights into their mindsets. Usyk remains focused on his legacy, determined to cement his status as an absolute world champion.
Meanwhile, the spectrum of Fury’s comments on the fight ranges from ‘it’s just another day at the office’ to ‘the most significant event in my entire career’. All about boxing glory. Aiming to secure his place as a cultural icon.
Oleksandr Usyk expressed his desire to achieve the status of absolute world champion, emphasising the significance of this accomplishment to him. He stated that his motivation lies in building his legacy rather than monetary gain.
Big Plans
Despite the looming presence of Tyson Fury, Usyk asserted his focus on his own path and dismissed distractions posed by Fury’s antics, citing his immunity to such tactics where others have faltered. Tyson Fury emphasised his financial aspirations, aiming to become the wealthiest individual and topping the Forbes list.
Additionally, he disclosed plans for a biographical film. Fury confidently outlined his upcoming bouts, envisioning two clashes with Usyk to vie for the absolute world champion title, followed by engagements with Joshua, who just knocked out Ngannou, potentially including a rematch, and later a rematch with Ngannou.
With tensions rising and anticipation reaching a fever pitch, the stage is set for a historic showdown between Usyk and Fury. Hopefully May 18th.
