With the Indian Wells WTA tournament underway and first rounds completed let’s take a look at the results and the draw of the next round.
While watching the first days of WTA Indian Wells 2024 I wanted to emphasize the continuation of the trend, which is the successful comeback of a few tennis stars from their breaks due to motherhood:
- Caroline Wozniacki who announced her return to the Tour last June after giving birth to her daughter Olivia Wozniacki Lee in 2021 and to the son James Wozniacki Lee in 2022.
- Angelique Kerber who returned in 2024, after her daughter Liana was born in 2023.
- Elina Svitolina who got a title WTA Comeback of the Year 2023 after comeback in April last year, after she had her daughter Skaï Monfils with her husband, former ATP Top 10 Gael Monfils in 2022.
- Naomi Osaka who returned to tennis in 2024 after giving birth to her daughter Shai.
Following this trend do you think we should expect comeback of Ashleigh Barty, who also has a baby? In her recent interview she explained she will not, since she is busy and has no time to train, however let’s wait for a surprise!
Wozniacki vs Volynets
Anyway, back to the Indian Wells. Caroline Wozniacki won a match against American Katie Volynets yesterday to advance to the round of 16. Volynets earlier defeated the 6th seeded Ons Jabeur. Caroline started the match powerfully and it seemed like it will be an easy night for her.

However in the second set Volynets showed hew will to fight. Both players demonstrated consistent tennis with accurate serves and small amount of errors, which led to long rallies. Wozniacki managed to control the play better opening the court with wide shots that made her opponent rush and leaving no chance for offence.
After second set won by Volynets Wozniacki totally dominated in the third and made her way to the next stage where she will face Angelique Kerber, both players were World No.1 earlier. The winner of the match will potentially meet the current number one ranked player Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinal.
In the second quarterfinal we can potentially see Marta Kostyuk and Italian Jasmine Paolini, Kostyuk didn’t have to play in the previous stage after surprising withdrawal of Marketa Vondrousova from the tournament, she didn’t give the reason for the withdrawal.
The rest of the participants of Round of 16 is yet to be decided later today, with a few players to watch being Elina Svitolina, Coco Gauff and Maria Sakkari.
